Rainbow Reflector
Spring/Summer 2000 What Counts?By Larry B. Reinhold
What has God done for you? What is He doing now? Do your kids know the answers to these questions? How about the neighbors or your fellow classmates or the people you work with?
Do we let others know about our blessings and God’s grace, mercy and love? We are so quick to speak about politics or who won the game last night. We can carry on a conversation about the stock market or the price of wheat in China.
Try this sometime: communicate your feelings for someone close to you, or for the President of the United States, or for your favorite sports team. Express your emotions to a total stranger about the economy or the environment. Now somewhere along the line testify of the hand of God. When it comes to establishing a testimony for the Lord God, we become rather mum. Oh sure, we know and love Jesus, but we are more into lifestyle evangelism. We don’t want to force it on anyone.
“It isn’t like my favorite football team. After all, every one knows they are the best. They won the Super Bowl two years ago.”
“I know that the Bible has the right answers and people should check it out, but it isn’t like electing a guy president and having to put up with who is appointed to the Supreme Court. I mean that affects our day-to-day life.”
“Oh sure, I believe that God is the Creator, but what does that have to do with the battle between those ‘enviro-greenies’ and those that would put pavement across the entire country.”
“Yes God is in charge of eternity, but that is so far away. However, I don’t know what Greenspan thinks he is? I don’t know what to do if those tech stocks should start dropping and after all it serves Bill Gates right; why no one should have that much money. And speaking of money - I just know Ted Turner is going to buy up the entire Great Plains and put buffalo out.”
“Did you watch the Oscars last night? I saw that movie seven times; except for a few bad words and the violence and the “you know what” scenes it was really good. I heard they showed a new video at Rainbow the other night, but some of those Christian films have such poor acting that they aren’t worth taking a friend to. Some of them get kind of preachy.”
“Oh, by the way I hear there is a testimony and singspiration service coming up on Sunday Night, but we have company coming in that morning and I will be picking them up at the airport on Sunday morning. I don’t want to overload them, and we have a very busy week ahead. Why the kids have a game on Monday. I can’t wait till my friends see how well my kids do. Then on Tuesday we have a concert at school. Normally I would help at AWANA on Wednesday, but I don’t know if these people are Christians and it is so noisy, that I think I will let them turn in early if they want. After all, I want to take them to that good eating-place in Deadwood on that next day. Just can’t beat those prices.”
