FAMILY

Just the word itself stirs up feelings of warmth, security and comfort. These thoughts were driven even deeper into my heart this fall as our family encircled the casket of my Dad, preparing to lower his earthly body into the very soil that had claimed his blood, sweat and tears over the years. At times like these, nothing compares to the love, support and camaraderie that has flowed through our veins, built on the foundation of Jesus Christ.

I realize that not everyone shares the same sentiments of family. Everywhere you look, there is brokenness, bitterness and resentment within the very structure that God designed to be a fortress and anchor. For thousands of years, the enemy of Christ's kingdom has been waging war against the family, because he knows that tearing down this God-created institution is a powerful weapon. The Bible tells us that Satan "comes only to steal and kill and destroy" (John 10:10). It seems that his fiery darts aimed at families have multiplied in our generation.

There are a couple of thoughts I want to share with you on this. First, no family is immune to breakdown. Even the strongest families are vulnerable. Scripture warns, "Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed lest he fall" (1 Corinthians 10:12).

Secondly, it's never too late to work on family relationships. Don't listen to the lie that your family is too far gone to be restored, "for with God nothing will be impossible" (Luke 1:37). Friend, healing, restoration and rebuilding can happen, and it begins with prayer and living the principles of God's Word.

“Lord, we need Your help, Your strength and Your wisdom. Put a hedge of protection around our families, and help us to put Your Word into practice in our lives….

“May we ‘put on the full armor of God so that (we) can take (our) stand against the devil’s schemes’ (Eph. 6:11).

“May we ‘love one another deeply from the heart’ (1 Peter 1:22).

“May we ‘be devoted to one another in brotherly love...and honor one another above ourselves’ (Romans 12:10).

“May we ‘be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave (us)’” (Eph. 4:32).

“May we ‘guard what has been entrusted to (our) care’ (1 Tim. 6:20).”

Is there a relationship in your circle that is flailing, going in a downward spiral? Your marriage? Your children? Your parents? Your siblings? Friend, seek help from a Godly, Biblical perspective. Sure, it’s hard work, but that relationship is a gift from God, and He is for you! It’s not too late! Hold on! Don’t give up! Fight for it...because it’s worth fighting for!
