Shirley I. Osterday

Shirley Jorgenson Osterday, 90, of Rapid City, died on Sat., June 23, 2012 at Rapid City Regional Hospital.
Shirley Irene Jorgenson was born on her family farm ten miles outside of Dell Rapids, SD on March 25, 1922 to Conrad and Nellie Marie (Norgaard) Jorgenson; she was the youngest of four children – Viola, Raymond, Norman and Shirley; she traveled back to the farm every August for a family reunion.
Shirley married Herbert “Herb” Osterday on January 3, 1945 at Dell Rapids after his service in World War II and they celebrated 59 glorious years of marriage; the couple moved to Rapid City in 1960 and opened Herb’s Bike Shop on the corner of 5th and St. Patrick Streets.
Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, two brothers and her sister. She was the wonderful and dedicated mother to three daughters: Shirleen (Mike) Fugitt of Pierre, SD, Jane (Bryan) Schulte of Burlington, Iowa and Pat (Mike Roberts) Peterson of Fort Collins, Colo.; the doting grandmother to Scott (Dawn) Kennedy, Ryan Kennedy, and Brooke (Kasey) VandeBerg and the great grandmother to Alison Kennedy and Thomas VandeBerg; she was anticipating the arrival of her third great grandchild soon. Her children and grandchildren knew her best for her infamous banana bread, which she dutifully baked for every family occasion.
Shirley was a dedicated employee of the Rapid City School District and worked as a matron at Central High School until her retirement. In retirement, Shirley enjoyed traveling with her husband to nearly all 50 states including Alaska and Hawaii, many by motor home; the couple also visited Germany, Holland, Austria and Switzerland.
Shirley was known to strike up a conversation with anyone and always enjoyed meeting new people; in her free time during retirement, she devoted nearly twenty years working at the Tilford Rest Area and Welcome Center along with Herb where they both loved greeting travelers and visitors to the state.
Shirley was an avid collector and looked all over the country for new additions to her shoe collection; after her husband, Herb passed away in 2004, she moved to Echo Ridge where she enjoyed playing cards every night and meeting many new friends.
Sam Kooiker, Mayor of Rapid City proclaimed Sunday, March 25, 2012 to be Shirley Osterday Day throughout the City of Rapid City in honor of her 90th birthday.
Visitation will be on Mon., June 25 from 5pm to 7pm at Kirk Funeral Home in Rapid City. Private interment will be held at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis, SD.
Memorial services are set for 11:00am Tues., June 26 at Parkview Ev. Free Church in Rapid City with the Rev. Mark Crossman officiating. A reception and luncheon will follow at the church.

Herbert R. Osterday, 81, of Rapid City, died Tuesday, Dec. 14, 2004 at a local nursing home from complications of Alzheimers disease.
Herbert R. Osterday was born December 24, 1922 at Hawarden, IA, the son of Herbert J. and Harriet M. (Comstock) Osterday. At age four, he moved with his family to Dell Rapids, SD. He married Shirley Jorgenson in Dell Rapids in 1945. Herb served as a Navy Cadet in World War II, and traveled while in the service before settling in Sioux Falls, SD, where he graduated from Nettleton Business College. Herb served on the Sioux Falls Police Force for 13 years. Herb and Shirley with their girls relocated to Rapid City in 1960. In Rapid City, Herb owned and operated Herbs Bike Shop for a number of years and retired from Harveys Lock Shop in 1984. After his retirement Herb and Shirley worked seasonally for South Dakota Tourism at the Tilford Welcome Center. He was a member of First Evangelical Free Church. Herb enjoyed flying and held a pilots license, and was a member of the Civil Air Patrol for many years. He also enjoyed golfing, hunting, fishing, playing the Saxophone, and spending time with his family and friends.
Herb is survived by his wife, Shirley, of Rapid City; three daughters, Shirleen Fugitt (Mike) of Pierre, SD, Jane Wilson (Bryan) of Burlington, IA, and Patricia Peterson (Mike) of Ft. Collins, CO; two brothers, Richard Osterday of Sidney, NE, and Jerry Osterday of Omaha, NE, and three grandchildren, Dr. Scott Kennedy (Dawn) of Spearfish, SD, Brooke VandeBerg (Kasey) of Milwaukee, WI, and Ryan Kennedy of Omaha, NE.
Herb was preceded in death by his parents, an infant brother, an infant sister, his brother, Robert, and sister, Dorothy.
Visitation will be at Kirk Funeral Home in Rapid City on Thursday from 5:00pm to 7:00pm.
Services will be at First Evangelical Free Church in Rapid City at 4:00pm on Friday, Dec. 17, 2004 with the Rev. Mark Crossman officiating. A private family burial will take place prior to the service at Black Hills National Cemetery, in Sturgis, SD. A reception will be held at First Evangelical Free Church following the service.
